Reminiscence of 824/A

Memory is one of the most personal and sensitive aspects of human life. However, the memories continue to accumulate until the soul is separated from the physical body. Where are resonance and feeling active in the thought process and also with the thoughts of the physical body or the sensual body’s different involvement. It is related to the coexistence of conscious and subconscious, which is the innate quality of human character. It gets incisive attention as an important element for every artist. It conveys their respective visuals in a general, classical, or contemporary manner through a variety of artistic expressions.

Sarah Jabin earned her MFA in 2019 from the Drawing and Painting Department of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts. As a young practitioner, she expresses her understanding and observation through continuous experimentation. Everyone has an exceptional dream and emotion for their first solo exhibition. Sarah contextualizes that emotion for her very first solo as a site-specific execution in her residence, Khilgaon chourasta 824/A, in which she plays the role of a reminiscence all alone in her residence. Whereas I was born and grew up in neighboring regions, we spent more than a year preparing the exhibition with lots of discussion and investigation.

On paper, 824/A Residential House is 60 years old. Here, she spends her childhood surrounded by this old architecture and develops an innate relationship with everyday objects. However, the exhibition outruns the architecture by establishing a new understanding and conversation with the representation of the objects and the emotion of her family; at times, she attempted to achieve abstract satiety by touching and reciprocating her feelings with the old objects, which became more meaningful with her growth, and gaining an affinity with the fairy tale from her elders. All of those black-and-white moments get glowing into her work in a sculptural and two-dimensional way. Old photos give her ideas to create new compositions, keeping in mind her godly family; according to Sarah those are “shukhchobi” (images of blessedness). With this bless ness she tried to document some of her mother’s feelings by the stitch on muslin cloth. Overall, this exposition is a site-specific presentation, whereas the announced or established white cube could disrupt the emotion of Sarah Jabin sensitive first solo.
